Marfa My Dear
The History: The band has made
three trips to the Big Bend area. First, in the mid-1970s,
the boys ventured to Sul Ross University in Alpine. The
second time they made the seven-hour drive was a
turn-of-the-century trip to perform Paul Gillia's popular song,
In Lajitas, actually at the Lajitas Resort. The
triple-play was executed in September 2010 when the band played
a fantastic wedding in Marfa, home of the mysterious lights.

The Road: You see, as
Bob Wills so aptly put it, "Miles and Miles of Texas" on the
road to Marfa and just when you think you're getting close
you encounter another endless stretch like this one. This
vehicle has a motto: Trust Your Garmin. |
The Room: No
air-conditioning? No problem. The Marfa evening
was clear and cool -- perfect for a big party. The
inside of the main reception room seemed to emulate
the magnificent Marfa skies, which a local called the
"darkest skies anywhere." The party ran into the wee
hours of the morning. |

The
Band: There's a reason Reunion was named "Best of
Weddings" as the group was in fine form -- in the pink, if
you will. At right, John and Paul do their thing. |

The Mysterious:
A post-gig trek to the official Marfa Lights sighting
station was made by a few band diehards. They looked
up in awe at the "billions and billions" of stars
saturating that darkest sky. The mysterious Marfa
lights? They remained a mystery as they weren't
spotted. The group learned later that the lights are
persnickety about their appearance. But locals attest:
they do exist. Still, in mysterious Marfa there are always
unusual sightings, such as... |
The Shadow...
|
And the Spider...
