UT Connections
|
There was a special moment during a June 2012 Wedding at The
University of Texas' posh
Golf Club at Steiner Ranch. The third set opened with 'The
Eyes of Texas' (the couple's request) accompanied by the 300-strong
Longhorn Band all crammed into a little iPod. The club's patio was
filled with faithful who, under a big Texas moon, bottom photo, got
their Horns Up in a special moment of Longhorns and Love.
..."til
Gabriel blows his horn." |
When that final line was sung Reunion's
three-strong horn section (and we do mean strong) struck up
'Texas Fight', the band joined in, and the place was humming on a Burnt
Orange frequency. The moment reminded us, yet again, of Reunion's UT
ties. How could you not be tied to the Horns when most of
your musicians are natives of Central Texas? Some of the band even took
it so far as to graduate from the Forty Acres. Reunion's UT grads
are: |
Paul Hudspeth, Physics, Class of
1976. The band's bassist has, perhaps,
the closest connections because his father was Professor of Physics on
the Main Campus. The Emmitt L. Hudspeth Centennial Lectureship in
Physics is named for him. That's gravitas! Paul, shown at the
stage near the 18th green, has taught physics for his adult life. |
Sam Jeffrey, Business, Class of 1976.
Reunion's bandleader and lead trumpeter, in top photo, has parlayed his
UT degree into and impressive career with major manufacturers. |
Kelly Hodge, Journalism, Class of 1976.
Like Paul and Sam, Kelly formed
the original Reunion during high school then watched in dumbfounded
amazement when the band helped fund four years at UT-Austin (degrees
were FAR less expensive then). Both
of Kelly's parents graduated from UT in the 1940s. |
Mike Carrell, Engineering, Class of 2012.
John's son and the band's technical director received his degree in May
2012. In Engineering. Yeah, he's got it going on.
Congratulations, Mike, and welcome to the club! Of course, what this should tell you is that if you
bleed orange there's no more appropriate band -- from repertoire to
educational pedigree -- for your big event than Reunion.
And, as always, Hook 'Em Horns!
The UT Golf Club, of course, is the home to the NCAA Mens
Golf Team that would win the National Championship on the very
next day. Did Reunion's Longhorn aura have anything to do
with it? You make the call. |
